The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is the component of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools-Commission on Colleges Reaffirmation of Accreditation process that reflects and affirms that learning is at the heart of the institution’s mission. QEPs must describe a carefully designed course of action that addresses a well-defined and focused topic or issue related to enhancing student learning and it must be embedded within the institution’s ongoing planning and evaluation process. The QEP is an opportunity to focus on an issue important to improving student learning. It requires institutional commitment, a robust assessment plan and high potential for sustainability.
Virginia Tech’s QEP Pathways to Success focused on first year experiences. Its intent - to engage student students through first year academically based experiences that provide curricular and co-curricular learning opportunities and intellectual and practical skills that are foundational to student’s development into lifelong learners – was successfully met. Over the five year period of the QEP, academic years 2010-11 through 2014-15, the number of courses that were revised or created grew from five to twenty nine and the number of students participating grew from a little less than a thousand to more than 4500. Upon the successful completion of the QEP, Virginia Tech is continuing the support of the courses under the leadership of the office of First Year Experiences.
